Berlin, November 28, 2024 – The German Expert Council on Integration and Migration (Sachverständigenrat für Integration und Migration - SVR) has issued a strong appeal for the EU to implement the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) reform swiftly and collectively. In its latest position paper, the SVR highlights the urgency of unified action, warning of severe consequences if member states opt for national approaches.
“The EU is at a crossroads: will it take the path towards a Europe of solidarity or risk the final collapse of the CEAS?” asks SVR Chairperson Professor Hans Vorländer. The paper outlines key recommendations, urging balanced reform implementation, a rejection of divisive rhetoric and to avoid a ‘race to the bottom’ between Member States for the toughest measures. Professor Hans Vorländer summarizes that “The goal, as simple as it is fundamental, is to manage migration as sustainably as possible while complying with common law. Sustainable migration management in Europe, especially in the area of asylum, is only possible in a coordinated manner; national measures are not enough here”.
For those interested in the future of European asylum policy, the SVR’s position paper provides a detailed roadmap.
