The Swedish Government’s strategy for development aid in relation to migration, return, and voluntary repatriation sets out clear objectives to support partner countries in receiving migrants returning from Sweden. This represents a relatively new area of engagement for Swedish development cooperation. How have other European countries approached these issues, and what measures are they taking to support return? What lessons can be drawn from their experiences?
In a forthcoming anthology, researchers from the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and Norway present analyses of how their respective countries have responded to return-related challenges and the insights they have gained. The anthology also includes a synthesis of what these experiences may imply for Swedish policy and aid.
The publication is a collaboration between the Expert Group for Aid Studies (EBA), the Migration Studies Delegation (Delmi), and the European Migration Network Sweden (EMN), and is expected to be published in spring 2026.
