In autumn 2026, Delmi will publish a new policy brief based on the research project Does the RUT tax deduction contribute to increased integration and labour market mobility among immigrants?, led by Karin Halldén at Mälardalen University and Stockholm University together with Anders Stenberg at Stockholm University.
The project examines the role of the RUT tax deduction in the labour market integration and mobility of foreign-born workers. Among other things, it explores whether employment in the RUT sector - i.e. tax-subsidised household services such as cleaning and childcare - can serve as a stepping stone to more qualified and better-paid jobs. The project also examines the significance of the RUT tax deduction for entrepreneurship and opportunities to move into managerial positions.
The research project runs from 2024 to 2027 and is funded by the Swedish Research Council within the framework of the national research programme on migration and integration. In addition to strengthening research in this field, the programme aims to ensure that research findings are disseminated and made accessible beyond academia.
The policy brief is planned to be presented at a seminar in December 2026 as part of Delmi and the Swedish Research Council’s joint seminar series Conversations on Migration and Integration – Researchers Meet Practitioners.
