During 2015 and 2016, Sweden ended up in the global spotlight as a “final destination” country for many people seeking protection within the European Union. The large reception of refugees and the uneven distribution between the European countries also had consequences within Sweden, leading to a particularly uneven reception of refugees between Swedish municipalities. This policy brief focuses on the differences between the municipalities, and studies local migration policy in Sweden before, during and after the refugee crisis, as well as the policy changes that this event brought forth.

The authors of the policy brief are Jon Nyhlén, Associate Professor in Political Science at Stockholm University, and Gustav Lidén, Associate Professor in Political Science at Mid Sweden University.
